Brief Introduction to a Chemical / Portable Toilet.
Portable Toilets are primarily designed for installation in remote locations where conventional plumbing is not available. They are typically used on large scale events and in the construction industry.
Chemical toilets typically comprise of an effluent tank that is approximately 100 litres in size. A blue chemical dose is then placed in the effluent tank prior to use diluted with a amount of water. This blue liquid is designed to illuminate any odours that may come from the unit as well as breaking down any waste in the tank. Formaldehyde use to be the most common chemical to be used by the portable toilet industry but due to the health risks now associated with this chemical the industry is now steering away from it.
A fresh water sink for hand-wash. This is usually manufactured from plastic resin and has a foot-pump or hand pump to draw water from a fresh water reservoir contained in the sink unit. Waste water from the sink drains into the toilet effluent tank.
Toilet paper holder/dispenser – Self explanatory I think.
There are many types of chemical toilets on the market. These vary from the standard portable chemical toilet that you may see on a festival site, to the trailer type you may find a wedding or upmarket event, in principle, they work in the same way. They just entail different presentation.
Portable chemical toilet whether they be of a single chemical cubical type or a trailer type require regular emptying to removal of any effluent and to prevent odours building up.
Portable toilets are emptied by means of a tanker. The tanker is equipped with a suction hose which sucks any effluent from the toilet unit. Effluent is then discharged at an authorised discharge point. These are governed by the environmental agency in conjunction with the local water authority. Not discharging at these points can result in prosecution.
Due to the nature type of portable toilets and the fact that effluent has to be removed. It is common practice in the United Kingdom for individuals to hire portable toilets.
